SAFRA's Data Migration and Microservices Implementation

Problem

SAFRA, a hub for Singapore’s National Servicemen (NSmen) and their families, needed a tech refresh. Their existing data infrastructure, loaded with vast amounts of data coming from various systems, struggled to keep up. It slowed them down, restraining their ability to provide seamless services and experiences. Recognizing the need for agility, SAFRA aimed to modernize their architecture for faster development and innovation.

Challenge

The key challenge was building a modern infrastructure that could handle SAFRA’s ever-growing data while enabling the creation of new features. This meant migrating data from various sources to a new microservices-based architecture. The migration had to be smooth, ensuring data integrity, minimal downtime, and uninterrupted services for members. Additionally, SAFRA needed microservices that could easily work with existing systems and support future growth.

Engagement

We partnered with SAFRA to lead this data migration and microservices implementation. We started by thoroughly assessing their existing infrastructure. Then, we designed a new architecture built on microservices principles and a detailed migration plan best suited according to their needs.

To move data from legacy systems, we used SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) packages. These packages extracted, transformed, and loaded (ETL) the data into the new architecture. We also designed and built a suite of microservices to power core functionalities like membership management, facility booking, and event registration. Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with SAFRA’s IT team for a smooth transition and provided training and support for the new system.

Results

The new architecture and microservices brought significant improvements. Data migration happened efficiently with minimal disruption. The new system improved data accessibility and reliability, allowing SAFRA to personalize member experiences. Microservices sped up development cycles and offered more flexibility, enabling SAFRA to adapt to changing member needs and market trends. Ultimately, this project modernized SAFRA’s technology infrastructure, empowering them to better serve NSmen and their families, that up hold their position as the go-to destination for social, recreational, sports, and educational activities.
